brat winter part 2
what's with fío?
Hi all,
You may have seen my instagram story last week, or noticed subtleties that I am now going by Fío.
On 28 June (Pride! Also the 11th anniversary of legally changing my last name to Avocado) I was outside at a PRIDE celebration at Plaza Moma in La Plata and it was in the single digits celsius (30’s fahrenheit). There was a fire pit, a queer guerilla art installation of a closet, and a couple of DJ’s and a dance party. I was spacing out in my own head (classic pisces move), thinking about how a lot of people here call me Fío, and how I really like it. I always struggle with nicknames, I never liked being called Fi or Fifi because it made me feel like i’m a poodle, which is quite contrary to my personality. My dad occasionally calls me Ona (which I like, but that’s reserved only for him!)
When I realized I identify as non-binary/agender, continuing to go by Fiona (which is a name I do actually like) made a lot of people automatically assume my gender as female, woman, lady, ma’am, rather than having a curiosity about my gender identity, a practice I wish would be adopted.
Anyway—hearing people call me fío on a regular basis felt like an “aha” moment—I felt seen.
I still use Fiona for my name / branding / etc., but if we’re friends or in community together I would like to be called fío.
Thanks y’all—have a beautiful week. More soon.
xoxo fío
